The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act provides that every person has the following new legal rights:

The right to access official records held by Government Departments or other Public Bodies
listed in the Act such as Health Boards and Local Authorities.

The right to have personal information amended where such information is incomplete,
incorrect or misleading.

The right to be given reasons for decisions taken by public bodies that affect them.
From 21st October 1999 the Freedom of Information Act incorporates some of the larger Voluntary Bodies i.e. those with funding above £2 million as public bodies.
These rights mean that from 21st October 1999 members of the public may seek access to personal information held on them by COPE Foundation, no matter when the information was created, subject to availability, having regard to public interest, and the right to privacy.
